SUSTAINABILITY

At Yensrai, sustainability is not an afterthought, it is the foundation of everything we do. Our infrastructure is designed to protect the fragile island ecosystem, with all wastewater carefully removed from the island, treated, and prevented from entering groundwater or the surrounding ocean. We actively collaborate with local partners to support reef preservation and restoration initiatives. Helping to safeguard Raja Ampat’s extraordinary marine heritage, we are actively replanting corals on the house reef. Our operations prioritize minimal environmental impact. We aim to provide meaningful benefits to nearby communities through employment, partnerships, and education. Every part of Yensrai’s design and operation reflects a commitment to keeping the island and its waters healthy for generations to come and of benefit to local communities.

Local Materials

To date, 60% of our total investment in Yensrai has gone directly into local villages. We have achieved this by prioritizing locally available materials for all our construction needs.

Local Craftsmen

In addition to materials, we have encouraged local builders to step up and take on the responsibility of building Yensrai's facilities. This has brought 2 years of consistent employment to a village with few economic opportunities beyond fishing.

Local Ownership

Our local owners will continue to receive a share of income from the island for as long as Yensrai operates, ensuring fair benefits as the lodge evolves and grows into a successful, thriving business.

CORAL RESTORATION PROJECT

At Yensrai, conservation begins right at our doorstep. Starting with our house reef, we are supporting coral restoration using proven methods already being practiced throughout Raja Ampat, including the placement of rebar “reef stars” onto which healthy coral fragments can be carefully attached and given the opportunity to grow. We approach this work with humility, learning from the experience of local communities, global conservation groups, and others who have been protecting the plant's reefs long before us. It is one part of a much broader commitment: to care for the forests that surround us, help nurture the reefs below, support the communities who call Raja Ampat home, and ensure that Yensrai remains a place where nature is not simply enjoyed, but actively protected.
